Amnesty International has expressed serious concerns regarding the increasing instances of abductions in Kenya, indicating that such actions may tarnish the nation’s international reputation. Roland Ebole, the agency’s Regional Researcher, highlighted the vital need to address this troubling trend to meet global human rights standards. He stated, “We should talk about ending these cross-border repression that we are seeing, bring accountability, and call for justice,” emphasizing the gravity of the situation for Kenya’s global standing as a prospective UN hub.
Ebole urged for government accountability in light of the alarming rise in abductions, particularly following the Gen Z protests in June 2024. The Kenyan government faces growing public scrutiny due to accusations that security operatives are behind the abductions of citizens and foreign nationals. Notably, the abduction of Ugandan opposition leaders Kizza Besigye and Obed Lutale in Nairobi added to these concerns, leading to their subsequent court proceedings in Uganda.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported a troubling 82 abduction cases documented since June 2024, with 29 individuals still unaccounted for. This amid previous incidents including the arrest and deportation of 36 opposition members to Uganda under terrorism charges. Moreover, in October 2023, seven Turkish asylum seekers were abducted in Nairobi, with four quickly returned to Turkey, raising further alarm over the situation.
