Uganda and Ethiopia Seek Cooperation to Tackle Regional Challenges

Ethiopia and Uganda officials met to strengthen bilateral ties, focusing on trade, regional security, and shared challenges like climate change and the Sudan conflict. They agreed to convene the Fourth Joint Ministerial Commission in Addis Ababa early next year to enhance cooperation across various sectors.

On November 28, 2024, in Addis Ababa, the State Minister of Foreign Affairs for Ethiopia, Ambassador Mesganu Arga, met with his Ugandan counterpart, Hon. John Mulimba, to engage in discussions centered on bilateral and regional matters of common concern. The ministers recognized the robust relationship that Uganda and Ethiopia share, emphasizing the need for closer cooperation to enhance trade and investment through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Ambassador Mesganu highlighted the critical importance of joint efforts between the two nations to address transnational challenges, including violent extremism, environmental issues, climate change, and human trafficking. He further addressed the necessity for collaboration in the sustainable management of transboundary resources, while also emphasizing efforts to maintain regional peace and security, particularly in relation to the ongoing conflicts in Sudan.

Hon. John Mulimba expressed Uganda’s commitment to strengthening ties with Ethiopia and acknowledged the country’s keen interest in regional developments. He reiterated Uganda’s determination to work alongside Ethiopia and others to confront shared challenges, especially the situation unfolding in Sudan. Additionally, he advocated for a Pan-African perspective regarding the fair distribution of transboundary resources, which is pivotal for collaborative developmental initiatives.

To further solidify the progress made during these discussions, both sides agreed to convene the Fourth Joint Ministerial Commission in Addis Ababa early next year, aiming to deepen their cooperation across diverse sectors.

The discussions between Uganda and Ethiopia reflect a commitment to addressing mutual challenges within the East African region. Both countries face significant issues such as climate change, transnational crime, and political instability, particularly related to the situation in Sudan. By fostering stronger trade and investment ties and emphasizing collaboration on regional security, both nations aim to create a more stable and prosperous environment for their citizens. The upcoming Joint Ministerial Commission further underscores the importance of diplomacy and regional cooperation in tackling shared concerns.

In conclusion, the meeting between Ambassador Mesganu Arga and Hon. John Mulimba signifies the importance both nations place on collaborative efforts to overcome regional challenges. With a shared commitment to enhancing trade and addressing critical issues like climate change and security threats, Uganda and Ethiopia are poised to strengthen their bilateral relationship through upcoming initiatives such as the Joint Ministerial Commission.
