Sudan Appeals to U.S. for Cessation of UAE Support for RSF

Sudan’s Finance Minister, Gibril Ibrahim, has urged the U.S. to pressure the UAE to stop supporting the RSF, implicated in ongoing conflict in Sudan. He emphasized the need for international aid for post-war reconstruction and secured funding during his Washington meetings. Ibrahim dismissed claims of internal divisions within the army and allied militias, asserting their united front in the fight against rebellion.

In a significant appeal to the United States, Sudan’s Finance Minister Gibril Ibrahim has urged Washington to exert pressure on the United Arab Emirates to cease its support for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This request comes amidst ongoing conflict in Sudan, where the RSF has been battling the national army for dominance since April. Ibrahim asserted that Emirati assistance is exacerbating the violence and requested that the U.S. intervene to protect innocent lives in Sudan. Addressing accusations of internal strife within the Sudanese army, which is allied with groups like his own Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), Minister Ibrahim dismissed such claims as unfounded. He emphasized the current solidarity among the army and its allies in the fight for national unity, stating, “the movements and the army are one body in the battle for dignity.” In his visit to Washington, Ibrahim solicited support from various international financial institutions, appealing for a comprehensive assessment to gauge the war’s extensive damage. His efforts resulted in securing significant funding from both the World Bank and the African Development Bank, aimed at facilitating development initiatives in post-war Sudan.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a severe conflict primarily between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF, characterized as a paramilitary group, has received backing from the United Arab Emirates, which the Sudanese government and several international organizations have condemned. This situation has prompted Sudanese officials, notably Finance Minister Gibril Ibrahim, to seek intervention from the United States to halt foreign support for the RSF, arguing that it impedes peace efforts and prolongs the conflict. Ibrahim’s recent meetings in Washington aimed not only to address this urgent issue but also to secure funding for the recovery and rebuilding of Sudan.

In summary, Sudan’s Finance Minister Gibril Ibrahim calls upon the United States to intervene against Emirati support for the RSF, which he claims fuels ongoing violence. He affirms the unity of the Sudanese army and allied rebel groups in their current struggle. Furthermore, Ibrahim has acquired significant financial aid from international institutions during his trip to Washington to aid in Sudan’s recovery efforts post-conflict. The international community’s response to these appeals is highly anticipated in efforts to resolve the crisis.
