Eastern Cuba remains on alert with 1,799 aftershocks recorded following significant earthquakes. Authorities are urging preparedness among residents, with no tsunami threat identified. Leaders emphasize the importance of staying informed and ready for seismic activity.
The eastern region of Cuba remains vigilant following the detection of 1,799 aftershocks that have occurred since the significant earthquakes registered on Sunday morning. According to the latest report from the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), these tremors were recorded between 6:00 AM on Monday and 5:59 AM on Tuesday, encompassing two major quakes with magnitudes of 6.0 and 6.7 that produced considerable destruction in the region. In the previous 24 hours alone, 914 aftershocks were noted, with magnitudes ranging from 0.5 to 4.0, primarily in the Pilón-Chivirico region of Granma. Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, the first secretary of the Party in Santiago de Cuba, indicated on her Facebook platform that out of all recorded tremors, 63 were potentially perceptible to residents. She emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding seismic events. “That is what we ask of the people of Santiago: to stay informed about what needs to be done before, during, and after an earthquake,” stated Ms. Johnson. In light of these developments, Manuel Falcón Hernández, the governor of Santiago de Cuba, has encouraged citizens to prepare emergency backpacks containing essential items like identification documents, food, medical supplies, blankets, and house keys. He assured the public that there is no tsunami threat accompanying the seismic activity. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, the head of the national seismological service, highlighted that predicting short-term seismic events remains impossible; therefore, adherence to Civil Defense protocols for moderate or high-magnitude earthquakes is paramount.
Eastern Cuba has been grappling with substantial seismic activity, prompting local authorities to issue alerts and prepare citizens for potential consequences. Earthquakes can occur due to tectonic movement, often leading to aftershocks that can be intense and numerous. Preparing the population through awareness campaigns and proper emergency planning is critical in mitigating the risks associated with such natural disasters.
The eastern region of Cuba is currently under alert as it faces a series of aftershocks following substantial earthquakes. Local leaders are advocating for public preparedness to ensure safety during these seismic events. With extensive recorded aftershocks and an emphasis on maintaining vigilance and readiness, the community is being urged to follow established emergency guidelines in the wake of these geological threats.
