Leaders from the Acholi communities in South Sudan and Uganda have agreed on measures for peaceful coexistence and enhanced cooperation of security forces along their shared border. They discussed addressing border issues, ensuring effective communication, and fostering trade, with plans for future meetings to strengthen their collaboration.
On Friday, leaders of the Acholi communities from South Sudan and Uganda convened in Palabek Town, Uganda, to discuss cooperation and peaceful coexistence along their shared border. These discussions took place against a backdrop of previous tensions regarding border issues, which the leaders hoped to resolve through collaborative local efforts to facilitate trade and ensure the seamless movement of citizens. David Otim Okot, the Chairperson of the Acholi Community in South Sudan, emphasized the unity of these communities, stating, “We are one people that were divided by artificial colonial boundaries.”
During the meeting, leaders recognized the need for improved communication between the communities and security forces. They reported ongoing clashes along the border, which prompted the decision to enhance cooperation among the Uganda People’s Defense Forces and their South Sudan counterparts to tackle trans-border crime effectively. Furthermore, Otim noted the importance of verifying and demarcating the border to alleviate tensions, advocating for infrastructure improvements such as repairing roads and bridges to facilitate trade.
The meeting highlighted a commitment to mutual understanding and security, with a follow-up meeting planned for February to monitor progress and address outstanding issues. Attendees included parliamentarians, local chiefs, and notable elders, and the discussions were notable for the presence of Uganda’s Presidential Advisor on Military Affairs, General Salim Saleh.
The Acholi communities are divided between South Sudan and Uganda due to historical colonial borders that separated them. In recent years, issues have arisen regarding border disputes, leading to various tensions and incidents between these closely linked communities.
