Congolese Army Captures Rwandan Soldier Amid Rising Tensions in Eastern DRC

The FARDC has captured Rwandan soldier Private Hakizimana Iradukunda Jean during clashes in the DRC. Trained in Rwanda, he is linked to the M23 rebel group, which both nations claim the other supports. This incident exacerbates existing tensions and mistrust between the DRC and Rwanda, highlighting the complexities of regional stability efforts.

On December 27, 2024, the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) announced the capture of a Rwandan soldier during ongoing conflicts in the eastern regions of the country. The soldier, Private 1st Class Hakizimana Iradukunda Jean, was taken into custody near Mambasa Hill on December 21 amid skirmishes between FARDC special forces and suspected M23 rebels. He was reportedly among a group of recruits trained in Rwanda, allegedly for operations associated with the M23 insurgent movement.

Private Hakizimana, born in Rwanda on February 22, 2002, hails from Ngororero in Rwanda’s Western Province. He was recruited in 2023 along with approximately 900 others at the IWAWA/Karongi Training Center, which is claimed by the FARDC to be associated with M23 rebel preparations. Following training, he and his group allegedly crossed into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and were received by M23 commander Colonel Makenga Sultan. Their presence in the DRC has led to heightened tensions between the DRC and Rwanda, as both nations accuse each other of directly supporting hostile armed groups.

The capture of Private Hakizimana highlights the complexities of the ongoing conflict in the eastern DRC and the fractious relationship between the DRC and Rwanda. With both governments trading accusations of supporting insurgents, the situation remains fraught with tension. The FARDC has vowed to intensify military action against armed groups, but without addressing mutual grievances, particularly regarding the presence of the FDLR, sustainable peace appears elusive in the region.
