Italy and the Dominican Republic Collaborate on Aerospace Development Initiatives

On the occasion of National Space Day, the Embassy of Italy in the Dominican Republic and various local institutions, including the Dominican National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism (CNCCMDL), convened a conference titled ‘Promoting Aerospace Development: Italian-Dominican Cooperation’ at the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (Intec). This event was designed to educate students from Intec and the Don Bosco School about the significance of developing nano-satellites for critical applications such as monitoring marine biodiversity and the sargassum seaweed phenomenon.

Marco Lisi, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s special envoy for space, emphasized Italy’s commitment to assisting the Dominican Republic in enhancing its capacity for the observation, collection, and analysis of aerospace data. He presented on the advancements of the Italian space sector, commemorating the 60th anniversary of Italy’s first satellite, the San Marco I, launched on December 15, 1964.

Paolo Marzioli from La Sapienza University of Rome highlighted the beneficial impacts of space technology on national scientific and technological capacities, indicating notable advancements in diverse areas such as aeronautics, physics, and electronics. Rodolfo Colaci, the Acting Chargé d’Affaires at the Italian Embassy in Santo Domingo, stressed the significance of collaboration and space diplomacy in addressing global challenges.

Teodoro Jiménez, head of Geomantics at CNCCMDL, acknowledged the importance of Italian assistance in the Dominican space sector, particularly for the establishment of the National Centre for Climate Archives Processing. Edwin Sánchez Camilo, an engineer from Intec, elaborated on the stages of the Quisqueyasat-1 project, emphasizing its role in monitoring the sargasso occurrence and setting the groundwork for future projects.
