Fairtrade Producers Implement Climate Change Adaptation Plans for Resilience

A report by Fairtrade International reveals that numerous Fairtrade producer organisations have established climate change adaptation plans to bolster resilience against climate impacts. By the end of 2022, 502 organisations had developed such plans, primarily among coffee producers, but also other sectors like cocoa and tea. Most organisations reported positive outcomes, but further support and collaboration are needed to tackle future climate challenges effectively.

Fairtrade producer organisations are increasingly adopting climate change adaptation plans (CCAPs) to enhance their agricultural resilience in response to climate challenges. According to a recent study by Fairtrade International, 502 producer groups had developed such plans by the end of 2022, representing approximately 25% of all Fairtrade certified organisations. Predominantly initiated by coffee producers, these plans have also been extended to cocoa, tea, banana, and sugar producers to combat issues such as elevated temperatures, pest invasions, droughts, and water shortages. The research indicates that 96% of these organisations have at least partially implemented their CCAPs, employing various strategies including cultivating disease-resistant crops, improving soil conditions, and managing water use efficiently. Analyses of the plans revealed most were of good or moderate quality; however, some lacked context regarding climate threats and connection to the chosen adaptation actions. The engagement of farmers in the development process has led to increased awareness and knowledge, prompting initial adaptation efforts.

Climate change poses significant threats to agricultural production globally, particularly affecting smallholder farmers in developing regions. As temperatures rise and extreme weather events become more frequent, farmers face increasing challenges in sustaining their produce.
