The Xport Accelerator Programme seeks to enhance the export readiness of SMEs in Mauritius by providing comprehensive training on international trade, fostering collaboration with industry experts, and leveraging opportunities presented by the AfCFTA. A recent workshop attended by SMEs from Mauritius and Seychelles focused on critical areas such as export strategy and financial risk management, highlighting the potential of the African market for these businesses.
The Xport Accelerator Programme is a strategic initiative designed to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Mauritius by enhancing their export readiness and enabling them to capitalize on trade opportunities within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). A recent workshop held from October 14 to 16, 2024, facilitated by the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), brought together representatives from 15 Mauritian SMEs and three from Seychelles. This three-day training aimed to deepen their understanding of the African market and the complexities involved in exporting goods and services. During the workshop, participants engaged in focused training sessions covering vital areas such as export strategy, international marketing, financial risk management, logistics, and regulatory requirements. Insights were also provided on brand positioning, digital marketing, and banking services. Experts from various institutions, including the MCCI, the Customs Department of the Mauritius Revenue Authority, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, shared relevant knowledge about existing trade agreements. This interactive format allowed SMEs to pose questions and seek guidance regarding the challenges of exporting to African markets under the AfCFTA framework. Mr. Patrice Marie, the Vice-President of the MCCI, underscored the significant role SMEs play in the Mauritian economy, contributing approximately 40% to the GDP and accounting for 55% of employment. He stated, “There are nearly 120,000 SMEs actively engaged in various sectors across Mauritius with evident potential for expansion into international markets. The export of services from Mauritius to the African continent is experiencing rapid growth in banking, medical, commercial, and other sectors. With the momentum generated by the African Continental Free Trade Area, we view the African continent as a highly promising region for service sectors.” Ms. Amanda Serumaga, the UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius and Seychelles, emphasized the opportunities available within the African market for fostering entrepreneurship and enhancing trade. She noted, “Africa, with its rich tapestry of cultures, resources, and innovative spirit, is swiftly emerging as a global hub for entrepreneurship, driving innovation and shaping markets. Yet, many entrepreneurs still face significant barriers when it comes to exporting their goods and services. To fully unlock the vast potential that African entrepreneurs possess, we must commit ourselves to the relentless pursuit of capacity building—an endeavour central to the mission of the UNDP.” Through the Xport Accelerator Programme, Mauritian SMEs are poised to make significant strides in expanding their operations across the African continent. The programme’s focus on essential training and collaboration with industry veterans promotes an environment conducive to growth and sustainability for the participating enterprises.
The Xport Accelerator Programme is a dedicated initiative that aims to bolster the export capacities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Mauritius, particularly against the backdrop of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This programme seeks to bridge the gap between local SMEs and the broader African market, which is increasingly viewed as a landscape ripe with opportunities for growth. The aim is to foster a deeper understanding of the complexities involving international trade and to equip these businesses with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the African marketplace successfully.
In conclusion, the Xport Accelerator Programme represents a fundamental step towards enhancing the export capabilities of Mauritian SMEs. By providing critical training and strategic insights into the intricacies of international trade, the initiative not only prepares SMEs for the challenges of exporting but also positions them to thrive in the burgeoning African market. The concerted efforts of institutions such as the MCCI and UNDP signify a commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and facilitating economic growth through collaboration and knowledge sharing.
