Zambia and Burundi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a fibre optic cable connection under Lake Tanganyika, marking a significant step towards regional ICT infrastructure development. The project aims to improve communication capabilities and position Zambia as a technological hub for southern and eastern Africa. This collaboration is expected to enhance the lives of citizens in both countries by providing access to high-speed internet.
Zambia and Burundi have formalized their intent to enhance connectivity by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that facilitates the establishment of a fibre optic connection beneath Lake Tanganyika. The agreement paves the way for a fibre optic cable to be installed starting from Mpulungu District in Northern Province, traversing the lake to reach Burundi. A private entity has already completed the installation of 350 kilometers of the cable in the lake, marking significant progress in the project. During the signing ceremony, held at the recently concluded 2024 Digital Government Africa Summit in Chongwe District, the Zambian Minister of Technology and Science, Honorable Felix Mutati, remarked that this connection makes Burundi the ninth country linked to Zambia through fibre optic technology. Minister Mutati highlighted the importance of this connection in positioning Zambia as a pivotal regional hub for Information and Communication Technology (ICT). He further noted that the fibre optic infrastructure would empower Burundi to disseminate information across southern and eastern Africa through Zambian channels. The MoU was recognized as a notable achievement of the summit, which attracted over 500 participants, including more than 20 Cabinet Ministers from 33 different countries. Minister Léocadie Ndacayisaba of Burundi’s Ministry of Communication, Technology, and Information echoed the sentiments of cooperation, stating that this agreement fosters increased collaboration between the two nations. She emphasized that the fibre optic link would enhance the quality of life for citizens in both countries by facilitating access to high-speed internet for improved communication.
The establishment of fibre optic connections is increasingly becoming a strategic priority for many African nations aiming to bolster their technological infrastructure and improve communication capabilities. In this context, Zambia and Burundi’s partnership through the MoU contributes significantly to regional development initiatives by creating a technology framework that can serve wider communities. This initiative aligns with broader objectives within the African Continental Free Trade Area and regional integration efforts, emphasizing the role of technology in supporting economic growth and connectivity.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Zambia and Burundi for the fibre optic connection signifies a crucial step toward enhancing communication infrastructure within the region. This partnership not only facilitates direct connectivity between the two countries but also positions Zambia as a central ICT hub in Africa. Furthermore, the initiative promises to enhance the quality of life for citizens through improved internet access, contributing to socio-economic development.
